Motor Insurance

  • What types of car insurance are available in Kenya? There are generally two types: third-party and comprehensive.  
  • Is car insurance mandatory in Kenya? Yes, third-party insurance is legally required.  
  • How do I make an insurance claim? You will need to report any loss or damage to the insurance company in time and ensure that you submit all the necessary documents requested by your insurance company. You are required to co-operate with the insurance company to facilitate the smooth handling of the claim.  
  • Can I sell my vehicle together with its insurance cover? No. motor Insurance policies are not transferable because they are personal in nature.  
  • Does Motor Vehicle Comprehensive policy cover the driver and/or the owner? No. As the name suggests, Motor Vehicle Comprehensive policy only protects damage or loss to the motor vehicle and any claim made by the third parties.  

Health Insurance

  • Will I be covered for any illnesses or injuries which I have prior to joining the relevant medical scheme? Most insurance companies exclude cover for all pre-existing conditions during the first two years of membership.  
  • Is there a limit to the amount I can claim? Claims are generally payable up to the annual maximum limit as specified in your policy schedule.
  • How do I make a claim? Depending on the type of treatment which is required, claim procedures will differ
  • What hospital or Doctor/Medical practitioner can I use? An insured is free to use a Hospital or Doctor/Medical practitioner of their choice provided adequate and suitable treatment can be provided.  
  • Is there a waiting period before I am covered? Most international insurers commence cover soon as your application is received by them.
